St.Mary’s Chapel (Vadakke Kalary)

Around 70 years ago, Devassia Poovathunkal and Ouseph Machithaniyel, members of the parish, agreed to donate 1 cent of land each to establish a center for catechism for the kids belonging to the northern region of the parish church. Mathai (Kunjumatha) Mundakkatharappel and Esthappan Niravath built a shed in the said land and began catechism classes for students from 1st standard to 3rd standard- it was known as ‘Vadakkekkalari’. Later when Ouseph Machithaniyel took his land back, 4 cents of Poovathungal land, belonging to Vallilmyalil family and Pothamakkil family, was donated for the cause and classes continued after building sheds there. C O Varkey Cheravelil, Appachan Panichira, M M Ulahannan Thevarkattel were the first catechism teachers. It was decided 1963 that the procession ceremony of ‘Kallitta thirunal’ (the day of foundation laying of the church) would begin from Vadakkekkalari from then on. When the diocesan order came to conduct catechism classes nearby the church, the catechism sessions in Vadakkekkalari were stopped. The Kalari was maintained and repaired by the church from time to time.

When the Kalari became almost a ruin, in 1999, the building was demolished and a chapel in the name of Mother Mary was erected there under the leadership of the then vicar Fr. Augustine Vellaramkuzhy. It was renovated during the time of Fr. Joseph Kochuparambil so that the Holy Mass could be offered there from time to time. The works were supervised and lead by Vakkachan Panachira, Emmanuel Peethuruthel, and Raju Charamkulangara, convened by M M Ulahannan Thevarkattel.

When Fr. Joseph Idathumparambil became vicar in 2010, the chapel was again renovated by extending a sheet roof, glassing all the window panes, and aesthetically walling the compound. Permission was taken from the Bishop to offer a Holy Mass in the chapel, once every month. Holy Mass is offered now in the chapel every 3rd Saturday of the month. Parishioners gave generous donations for the sermons and the maintenance of the chapel.  The people of the area recognize greatly the blessings they receive day by day from God through the intersection of Mother Mary and through her immense love for her children.
